Lab Grown Diamonds VS Natural Diamonds

Lab-Grown vs Natural Diamonds

What’s the difference — and which is right for you?

Choosing a diamond today comes with more options than ever before. At Mandi & Co., we believe it’s important you feel confident and informed — whether you’re drawn to a natural (earth-mined) diamond or a lab-grown alternative.

Natural Diamonds (Earth-Mined)

Natural diamonds are formed deep within the earth over billions of years — created under immense heat and pressure long before they’re ever discovered.

Each stone carries a unique journey, making it not just a gemstone, but a piece of natural history.

Why clients choose natural diamonds:

  • Formed naturally over billions of years
  • Traditionally rare and highly valued
  • Strong long-term desirability and resale market
  • Each stone is completely unique

Lab-Grown Diamonds

Lab-grown diamonds are real diamonds — not simulants — with the same chemical, physical, and optical properties as natural diamonds. The difference lies in their origin.

They are created using advanced technology that replicates the earth’s natural process in a controlled environment, taking weeks rather than billions of years.

There are two main methods:

CVD (Chemical Vapour Deposition):
Diamond layers are grown from a carbon-rich gas, building the stone atom by atom.

HPHT (High Pressure High Temperature):
This method mimics the natural conditions deep within the earth, using extreme pressure and heat to form the diamond.

Why clients choose lab-grown diamonds:

  • More accessible price point
  • Larger size or higher quality for the same budget
  • Identical look and durability to natural diamonds
  • A modern, technology-driven alternative

Price Comparison

One of the biggest differences is price.

Lab-grown diamonds are typically 30–70% more affordable than natural diamonds of the same size and quality. This allows many clients to choose a larger or higher-grade stone within their budget.

Natural diamonds, however, tend to hold stronger long-term value due to their rarity and established market.

So, which should you choose?

There’s no right or wrong answer — it comes down to what matters most to you.

  • If you value rarity, history, and long-term tradition, a natural diamond may feel right.
  • If you prefer size, value, and a modern approach, a lab-grown diamond could be the perfect fit.

At Mandi & Co., we work with both — and guide you honestly based on your priorities, not ours.
